First Visit at Schwartz Dentistry
We want you and your child to always hold a positive attitude toward dental care. Keep in mind that if your child is scared and crying, this is okay! We specialize in dealing with these situations and will work on developing a special relationship with your child, even if it takes more than one appointment.
If you’re ready for more info, call us today and schedule your first visit.
Before the First Visit
Discuss the positive aspects of dentistry with your child. Convey positive feelings, be happy, and explain that the dentist will look at and count his/her teeth. Emphasize that the dentist will be gentle and friendly (we will be!).
- Please DO NOT tell your child that the dentist will not hurt, as this may have never entered his/her mind.
- Avoid using unpleasant words like needle, drill, shot, pull or any other word suggesting discomfort.
- Expect and encourage your child to do well and enjoy their first visit to our office and chances are, he/she will do exactly that!
The First Visit
This visit establishes a “dental home” for your child. During the initial appointment, we encourage you to come back with your child.
Your child will be introduced to our dental team and invited to tour the office. The doctor will perform a head and neck examination and then evaluate the health of the teeth, gums, and your child’s bite.
Dental radiographs are taken only as the doctors feel they are necessary. The doctors and team will teach you and your child about disease prevention, brushing/flossing techniques, and will discuss with you any dental issues directly.
Follow-Up Visits
If a follow-up appointment for treatment is necessary, we encourage children over 3 years of age to come back on their own.
We find that this builds independence and trust for the child and also enables us to better focus on your child. We understand that in many situations, a parent’s presence is helpful, in which case you will be asked to join us.
If you feel strongly about entering the treatment area with your child, please talk to us. We want to do whatever makes your child’s appointment the most successful.
